Surrey is a growing community of 1,350 residents located seven miles east of Minot, ND. Even as our town expands, we are proud to offer a small, hometown atmosphere. In 2022, after the City of Surrey could no longer support the “beautification” line item in their budget, which included the City’s plant and flower budget, several residents established The Surrey Good Neighbors Club (SGNC) to see what could be done on a local level.
Initially, the club was an avenue to buy, plant and sustain the flowers to brighten and cleanup the city after the long drab winters. Very quickly, club members identified other community needs and wanted to help. We have evolved and now have three main focuses: beautification, community engagement and meeting community needs.
Since 2022, activities relating to our focus are documented on our Facebook page.
There, you will be able to see our mission in action.

Meeting Community Needs
We place emphasis on helping families with food insecurity and personal hygiene products. We have local pick-up points. No questions asked.
Bringing the youth and senior populations together where both can learn from each other and friendships that enrich their lives as well as build strong community connections.
Offer opportunity for those who may be homebound a local activity to share, engage with peers and remain a part of their community.
SGNC’s next project is underway. We purchased land within city limits and will build a greenhouse facility, with two buildings arriving April 2024. To have the greenhouses ready for the upcoming planting season, we are fundraising to address the needs for preparation of the site, addition of raised gardening beds for our senior population, establish community garden plots for residents to have their own garden area and the growing equipment needed for the project. This project will benefit our community, allowing for family involvement in our horticulture program, teaching life skills and introducing people of all ages to the joy of growing their own fresh food. Aside from the bounty residents are able to grow for their own families, the plants grown in the greenhouses and surrounding gardens will serve many purposes: SGNC can grow their own flowers to plant around the city and grow fresh produce to be added to our food. This space will also be utilized as a future gathering space for educational programs and activities.
